拡大

かくだい · kakudai · JLPT N3 · noun

enlargement

🔍 拡大 = expand + big: make something bigger

拡 is hand 扌 + wide 広, so it means to widen something by hand. Add 大 (big) and you get enlargement. You see it on zoom buttons and in 拡大鏡 (kakudaikyō), which means magnifying glass.

大 — pictograph of a person with arms outstretched
大 is a pictograph showing a person standing with arms and legs spread wide. The outstretched arms suggest 'big' or 'great', extending from the literal image of a large stance to abstract meanings like important or grand. It is one of the oldest characters, found on oracle bones.
