手袋
てぶくろ · tebukuro · JLPT N4 · noun
baseball glove
🧤 手袋 = hand (te) + bag (fukuro): a bag for your hand
手 (te) means hand and 袋 (fukuro) means bag or sack. Joined together, the f of fukuro softens to b, giving te-bukuro. A glove is literally a hand-bag: a pouch each hand slips into.
手 — pictograph of a hand with five fingers
手 is a pictograph showing an open hand with fingers and a wrist. Early bronze and oracle bone forms clearly depict five splayed fingers, which simplified over time into the modern shape. It keeps its original meaning of 'hand' and also serves as a radical in many characters related to hand actions.
袋 — 代 (dài, phonetic) + 衣 (clothing)
袋 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The bottom 衣 'clothing/cloth' gives the meaning, since bags were originally made of cloth, while 代 on top supplies the sound 'dài'. It has long meant 'bag, sack, pouch'.
