手前

てまえ · temae · JLPT N2 · noun

before

✋ 手 (hand) + 前 (front) = the front within hand's reach, on this side of something

Built from hand and front: the space right in front of you, on your side of a boundary. That gives both meanings, 'before' in place or time and 'this side'.

手 — pictograph of a hand with five fingers
手 is a pictograph showing an open hand with fingers and a wrist. Early bronze and oracle bone forms clearly depict five splayed fingers, which simplified over time into the modern shape. It keeps its original meaning of 'hand' and also serves as a radical in many characters related to hand actions.

前 — top 丷 + 一 + 月 (moon) + 刂 (knife)
Originally written 歬, depicting a foot 止 above a boat 舟, meaning to advance or go forward. Over time the form evolved and the knife radical 刂 was added, while 止 and 舟 fused into the modern shape. The core meaning 'front, before, ahead' has stayed consistent.
