感覚

かんかく · kankaku · JLPT N3 · noun

sense

👃👂 感覚 = feel 感 + perceive 覚: what you feel and take in

感 (kan) means feel, as in 感謝 kansha, thanks. 覚 (kaku) means wake up or perceive, and it is the same kanji as in 覚える oboeru, to remember. A sensation is a feeling you notice.

感 — heart 心 + 咸 (xián, phonetic)
A semantic-phonetic compound. The heart radical 心 at the bottom carries the meaning of feeling or emotion, while 咸 supplies the sound. Together 感 conveys being moved in the heart, hence 'to feel,' 'sense,' or 'be affected by' something.
