感心

かんしん · kanshin · JLPT N3 · noun

admiration

感心 = feel (感) + heart (心): someone's skill moves your heart

感 means feeling or being moved, and 心 means heart or mind. Together they mean being touched at heart by someone's effort or skill, which is admiration. You'll often hear 感心しました (I was impressed).

感 — heart 心 + 咸 (xián, phonetic)
A semantic-phonetic compound. The heart radical 心 at the bottom carries the meaning of feeling or emotion, while 咸 supplies the sound. Together 感 conveys being moved in the heart, hence 'to feel,' 'sense,' or 'be affected by' something.

心 — pictograph of a heart with chambers and aorta
心 is a pictograph showing a stylized heart, with strokes representing the organ's chambers and the aorta at the top. Originally meaning the physical heart, it broadened to cover mind, feelings, and intentions, since ancient Chinese thought located thinking and emotion in the heart.
