😢🎭 悲劇 = sad (悲) + drama (劇): a sad drama is a tragedy
悲 (hi) means sorrow or grief; 劇 (geki) means play or drama, as in 劇場 (gekijō, theatre). Put sorrow on the stage and you get a tragedy. Its opposite is 喜劇 (kigeki), joy + drama = comedy.
