恩 sits 因 (cause, reason) on top of 心 (heart). When someone does you a favor, it becomes the cause of a lasting debt held in the heart. The on reading おん also appears in 恩人 (onjin, benefactor) and 恩返し (ongaeshi, repaying a kindness).
