恐怖

きょうふ · kyoufu · JLPT N3 · noun

fear

👻 恐 fear + 怖 dread = terror; kyoufu sounds like key-oh-phew!

Both kanji have the heart radical 忄/心, which marks feelings: 恐 means to fear and 怖 means to dread. Doubling two fear words makes terror. The pun: you hear a key in the lock at night, gasp oh!, then sigh phew!
