応接

おうせつ · ousetsu · JLPT N2 · noun

reception

🛋️☕ 応 respond + 接 meet in person = receiving visitors

応 means to respond and 接 means to come into contact. Together they mean answering a visitor face to face. You see it in 応接室 (おうせつしつ), the reception room where guests are seated and served tea.

接 — hand 扌 + concubine 妾 (phonetic)
接 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The hand radical 扌 carries the meaning of receiving or joining with the hand, while 妾 supplies the sound. From 'taking with the hand' it broadened to 'receive, meet, connect, join together'.
