志望

しぼう · shibou · JLPT N3 · noun

ambition

🎯 志 will + 望 hope = the goal you have set your heart on

志 is 士 (samurai) over 心 (heart), so it means resolve. 望 means hope, or gazing at something far away, as in 希望. Put together they name a goal you are aiming for: 志望校 is the school you are applying to.

望 — 亡 (phonetic) + 月 moon + 王 king/standing figure
Originally a pictograph of a person standing on tiptoe gazing at the moon, expressing the idea of looking far into the distance. Over time the figure was reshaped and 亡 was added as a phonetic element. The meaning extended from 'gaze afar' to 'hope for' or 'expect.'
