必死
ひっし · hisshi · JLPT N3 · na-adj
frantic
💀 必死 = certain + death: fight like it's do-or-die
必 means certain or must, and 死 means death. Facing certain death, you go all out, so 必死 means frantic, desperate effort. Hisshi even sounds a bit like a hurried hiss. It also keeps its literal sense: an inevitable result.
必 — heart 心 + slash 丿
Originally depicted a handle or marker driven through something, suggesting a fixed standard. The form was later reanalyzed as 心 (heart) with a stroke through it, reinforcing the sense of inner certainty. It came to mean 'must' or 'certainly'.
死 — 歹 (bare bones) + 匕 (kneeling person)
Originally a pictograph showing a living person (匕) beside skeletal remains (歹), depicting someone mourning or kneeling next to a corpse. The combination came to mean 'death' or 'to die.' The 歹 component, derived from a bone fragment, signals the death-related meaning across many related characters.
