彼ら = 彼 (kare, he) + ら (ra, plural suffix): he-and-company = they
彼 means he, and ら is a plural marker also found in 僕ら (we) and これら (these). Add ら to he and you get a group built around a male: they. For an all-female group, the same suffix gives 彼女ら.
