彼

かれ · kare · JLPT N4 · noun

helium

kare = that one over there; 彼 first meant that/yonder, later he

彼 is an old pointing word for something far from both speakers, as in あれ. Calling a man that one over there became the pronoun he, and then boyfriend. Add 女 (woman) and you get 彼女 kanojo: she, girlfriend.
