強い

つよい · tsuyoi · JLPT N5 · i-adj

strong

💪 tsuyoi: sounds like 'it's SO strong, yo!' — tsu-yo-i = strong

The kanji 強 has 弓 (bow) on the left: a bow that takes real strength to draw. Add the い ending and you get the adjective tsuyoi, strong or powerful. Its opposite, 弱い (yowai, weak), also contains bows, so the two pair up neatly.
