建てる

たてる · tateru · JLPT N4 · verb-ichidan

to build

🏗️🏠 建 = build; tateru is tatsu (to stand) made transitive: make it stand

立つ/建つ (tatsu) means to stand or be built. Swap the ending to -eru and it becomes transitive: 建てる, to make a building stand, i.e. to build one. Same pattern as 立てる (to stand something up).

建 — 廴 (stride radical) + 聿 (writing brush)
Originally depicted a hand holding a brush (聿) combined with the 廴 'stride/extend' radical, suggesting drawing out or laying down lines. From this came the meaning of setting up or establishing, as in marking out the foundations of a building. Today it broadly means to build, establish, or construct.
