建て

~だて · ~date · JLPT N4 · noun

~ storied

🏢🏠 建て = built: 二階建て is two-floors-built, 一戸建て is one-house-built

From the verb 建てる (tateru, to build). As a suffix, tate voices to date (rendaku). Attach it to a floor count for storeys (三階建て = three-storey) or to 一戸 for a detached house (一戸建て = built as a single home).

建 — 廴 (stride radical) + 聿 (writing brush)
Originally depicted a hand holding a brush (聿) combined with the 廴 'stride/extend' radical, suggesting drawing out or laying down lines. From this came the meaning of setting up or establishing, as in marking out the foundations of a building. Today it broadly means to build, establish, or construct.
