建つ

たつ · tatsu · JLPT N3 · verb-godan

to stand

🏗️🏠 建つ = 立つ (stand) for buildings: a house that gets built stands up

建つ and 立つ are both read tatsu. 立つ is a person or thing standing; 建つ uses 建 (build, as in 建物 tatemono, building) and is for houses and structures standing once built. Its transitive partner is 建てる, to build.

建 — 廴 (stride radical) + 聿 (writing brush)
Originally depicted a hand holding a brush (聿) combined with the 廴 'stride/extend' radical, suggesting drawing out or laying down lines. From this came the meaning of setting up or establishing, as in marking out the foundations of a building. Today it broadly means to build, establish, or construct.
