延びる
のびる · nobiru · JLPT N3 · verb-ichidan
to be prolonged
⏳ Sounds like no bye-ru: no goodbye yet, the meeting runs on and on
The kanji 延 means extend or delay, as in 延長 (enchō, extension or overtime) and 延期 (enki, postponement). With 延びる, time or a deadline gets longer. The 伸びる spelling is for physical stretching, like height or a rubber band.
延 — 廴 (long stride) + 㥯/丿 + 止 (foot)
延 originally depicted a foot (止) on a road or path (廴), suggesting walking a long way. From this came the meanings 'to extend,' 'to prolong,' and 'to delay.' The modern form retains 廴 on the left as the semantic clue for movement and extension.
