平和

へいわ · heiwa · JLPT N3 · noun

peace

🕊️ 平和 = flat/level + harmony: nothing tilted, everyone in tune

平 means flat, even or calm, as in 平日 (weekday). 和 means harmony, and it is also the old name for Japan. Peace is a level field where everyone gets along. Sound hook: hei-wa, hey, war is over.

平 — horizontal stroke 一 + 干 with two dots 八
平 originally depicted a balance or scale being level, suggesting evenness. The horizontal lines and symmetrical dots evoke a flat, balanced surface. Over time it extended from 'level/flat' to broader senses like 'calm,' 'peaceful,' and 'ordinary.'

和 — grain 禾 (phonetic) + mouth 口
和 is a phono-semantic compound: 禾 (grain) gives the sound and 口 (mouth) hints at meaning, originally suggesting voices joining in agreement or song. From this it came to mean harmony, peace, and 'together with'. In Japanese it also became the native word for Japan itself.
