幅

はば · haba · JLPT N3 · noun

width

📏 幅 = 巾 cloth + 畐: a bolt of cloth is measured by its width

The radical 巾 means cloth. 幅 first meant the standard width of a cloth bolt, and later came to mean width in general. For a sound hook, haba sounds like 'have a broad' road: a wide one.

幅 — cloth radical 巾 + 畐 (full)
A semantic-phonetic compound: 巾 (cloth) gives the meaning, since 幅 originally referred to the width of a bolt of cloth. 畐 supplies the sound, related to 'fu'. The meaning later broadened to 'width' in general and to a measure word for paintings or scrolls.
