🖼️ 展覧会 = unfold + look over + gathering: a meet-up to view what is laid out
展 (ten) means to spread out or display, 覧 (ran) means to look over, 会 (kai) means a meeting. 展覧 is displaying for viewing; add 会 and it becomes the event itself. The same 会 ends 音楽会 (concert) and 運動会 (sports day).
会 — 人 person on top + 云 cloud/say below (simplified from 會)
The traditional form 會 showed a lid over a vessel with contents stacked inside, depicting things coming together — hence 'meet, gather, assemble.' From 'gathering' it extended to 'meeting,' then 'understand' (minds meeting) and 'be able to.' The simplified 会 keeps only a schematic top and bottom.
