届ける

とどける · todokeru · JLPT N4 · verb-ichidan

to deliver (v.t.)

📦🚚 todo-keru: the parcel on your to-do list that you carry to the door

Todokeru starts like to-do: delivering is the to-do you finish by handing it over. It is the transitive partner of 届く (todoku, to arrive): you todokeru a parcel so that it todoku. The -eru ending marks the one doing the delivering.

届 — corpse radical 尸 + 由
届 originally combined 尸 (a bent body) with a phonetic element, depicting someone arriving at a destination. Over time it came to mean 'to reach,' 'arrive at,' or 'fall due,' and is now used for sessions or terms (e.g., a graduating class) that arrive on schedule.
