就く

つく · tsuku · JLPT N3 · verb-godan

to settle in

🪑 Same sound as 付く (stick to): you stick to a seat, a post, or a teacher

就 means to take up a position, as in 就職 (shūshoku, getting a job). Tsuku sounds like 付く (to attach) and 着く (to arrive): you arrive at a post and stay attached to it, whether that's a seat, a job, or a master you study under.

就 — 京 (capital) + 尤 (especially)
Originally a compound suggesting going to a high place (京 depicts a tall building) to settle or accomplish something. Over time the meaning shifted from 'approach a high place' to 'go to,' then broadened to 'accomplish,' and finally to the modern grammatical senses 'then,' 'just,' or 'precisely.'
