小説

novel

📖 小説 = small (小) + talk/theory (説): small talk that became the novel

From Chinese 小说, originally street gossip and minor tales, looked down on beside the classics. Tsubouchi Shōyō chose the word in the 1880s to translate the English novel. Sound hook: show + setsu, a show set in a book.

小 — three small strokes around a central vertical
小 is a pictograph originally showing three tiny dots or specks, suggesting small particles or grains. Over time the dots became stylized strokes flanking a central line. The core meaning 'small' has stayed remarkably stable from oracle bone script to today.
