尊敬

そんけい · sonkei · JLPT N3 · noun

respect

尊敬 = esteemed + respect: doubled-up honour for someone above you

尊 (son) means honoured or esteemed, as in 尊重 (respect for others). 敬 (kei) means respect, as in 敬語 (keigo, polite speech). Put together, 尊敬 is the deep respect you hold for a teacher or a role model.

敬 — 苟 (gǒu, phonetic) + 攵 (tap/strike)
Originally depicted a person being urged or disciplined with a stick (攵), with 苟 providing the sound. The early sense was 'to warn' or 'to be on guard,' which extended to careful, attentive behavior. From there it shifted to 'respect' and 'reverence,' the modern meaning.
