審判

しんぱん · shinpan · JLPT N3 · noun

judgment

⚖️ 審判 = examine (審) + judge (判): the one who examines, then rules

審 means to examine closely, as in 審査 (screening). 判 means to judge or stamp a decision, as in 判断 (judgment). A referee examines the play and then rules on it, so the same word covers umpire, referee and a court's judgment.

判 — half 半 (phonetic) + knife 刂 (semantic)
判 combines 半 'half' with 刂 'knife', literally suggesting cutting something in two. The knife radical gives the meaning of dividing or judging, while 半 provides the sound. From 'splitting apart' it extended to 'discriminate, judge, decide'.
