寝坊

ねぼう · nebou · JLPT N4 · noun

sleeping in late

🛏️⏰ 寝坊 = sleep (寝) + boy (坊): the sleepy boy who stays in bed too long

寝 means sleep, as in 寝る (neru). 坊 originally meant a monk's quarters, then a boy, and became a suffix for a person with a habit. So 寝坊 is literally a sleep-boy, a sleepyhead, and by extension oversleeping. Sound hook: ne-bou, nay, bow out of the alarm.
