寄せる

よせる · yoseru · JLPT N3 · verb-ichidan

to put aside

🧲 寄 = draw near, as in 寄る yoru: drop by. Yoseru makes things come close

寄る (yoru) means you go near something. Change it to 寄せる (yoseru) and you make something else come near instead, so you pull it in or gather it. A verbal hook: yo, send 'em over here!

寄 — roof 宀 + strange 奇 (phonetic)
A semantic-phonetic compound: the roof radical 宀 suggests a dwelling or shelter, while 奇 (qí) supplies the sound, shifted to jì. The original sense was to lodge or stay temporarily under someone's roof, which extended to entrusting, depositing, and eventually sending or mailing things to another's care.
