Both kanji mean staying the night: 宿 is the inn in 宿題's cousin 宿屋 (yadoya, inn), and 泊 is the counter for nights stayed, as in 一泊 (ippaku, one night). Two words for overnight stay stacked together give the formal term for lodging.
