家賃

やちん · yachin · JLPT N3 · noun

rent

🏠💴 家賃 = house (家) + fee (賃): the fee you pay for a house

家 (ya) means house, as in 家族 family. 賃 (chin) means a fee or charge, as in 運賃 fare and 賃金 wages. Put together, the house fee is your rent.

家 — roof 宀 + pig 豕
Originally a pictograph of a pig under a roof, since domesticated pigs were kept in or under the home in ancient China. Over time the meaning broadened from 'household' to 'family,' and by extension 'home' or a specialist (as in 专家, 'expert').
