家畜

かちく · kachiku · JLPT N1 · noun

domestic animal

🐄🐖 家 = house/domestic + 畜 = animal: animals kept at home, i.e. livestock

家 (ka) means house or domestic, and 畜 (chiku) means animal or livestock. Together they name animals raised on a farm, such as cattle, pigs, and horses.

家 — roof 宀 + pig 豕
Originally a pictograph of a pig under a roof, since domesticated pigs were kept in or under the home in ancient China. Over time the meaning broadened from 'household' to 'family,' and by extension 'home' or a specialist (as in 专家, 'expert').
