🏠 家庭 = house + courtyard: the household within its own walls
家 (ka) means house or family, and 庭 (tei) means courtyard or garden, as in 庭 niwa. A house plus its yard makes the domestic sphere, so 家庭 is home as a family unit, as in 家庭料理, home cooking.
家 — roof 宀 + pig 豕
Originally a pictograph of a pig under a roof, since domesticated pigs were kept in or under the home in ancient China. Over time the meaning broadened from 'household' to 'family,' and by extension 'home' or a specialist (as in 专家, 'expert').
