家主

やぬし · yanushi · JLPT N2 · noun

landlord

🏠 家 house + 主 master: the master of the house is the landlord

家 (ka) means house and 主 (nushi) means master or owner. Together they give yanushi: the owner of the house you rent is the landlord.

家 — roof 宀 + pig 豕
Originally a pictograph of a pig under a roof, since domesticated pigs were kept in or under the home in ancient China. Over time the meaning broadened from 'household' to 'family,' and by extension 'home' or a specialist (as in 专家, 'expert').

主 — flame/lamp on top of a stand 王
Originally a pictograph of a lamp with a flame on top of its stand, representing the lord or master of the household who tended the fire. The meaning extended from 'lamp/host' to 'master, owner, main, principal'. The character 炷 (wick) preserves the original 'lamp' sense.
