宴会

えんかい · enkai · JLPT N2 · noun

banquet

🍶🎉 宴 feast + 会 gathering = a feast gathering, a banquet

宴 (en) means feast or banquet, as in 宴席 banquet seat. 会 (kai) means meeting or gathering, as in 会議 meeting. Together they make a gathering held for a feast. In Japan an enkai is usually a work party with food and drinks, like a 忘年会 year-end party.

会 — 人 person on top + 云 cloud/say below (simplified from 會)
The traditional form 會 showed a lid over a vessel with contents stacked inside, depicting things coming together — hence 'meet, gather, assemble.' From 'gathering' it extended to 'meeting,' then 'understand' (minds meeting) and 'be able to.' The simplified 会 keeps only a schematic top and bottom.
