宛名

あてな · atena · JLPT N2 · noun

address

✉️ 宛 addressed to + 名 name = the name a letter is sent to; ate-na ≈ Attn:

宛 is the 宛 in 宛てる (ateru), to address something to someone, and 名 means name. Together they mean the addressee's name and address written on mail. Mnemonic: a-te-na sounds like Attn:, which you also write before a recipient's name.

名 — evening 夕 + mouth 口
A compound ideograph: in the dark of evening (夕), one cannot recognize others by sight, so the mouth (口) calls out a name to identify oneself. The original sense of 'name' broadened to include reputation, fame, and a measure word for people.
