安易

あんい · ani · JLPT N2 · na-adj

easy-going

安易 = calm 安 + easy 易: the path of least effort

Both kanji mean easy: 安 is also in 安い (cheap) and 易 in 容易 (simple). Two easies together tip into too easy, so 安易な考え is a lazy, careless idea. The tone is usually critical rather than relaxed.

安 — roof 宀 + woman 女
A pictographic compound showing a woman 女 under a roof 宀, suggesting safety and tranquility at home. The original meaning 'peaceful, calm, safe' has remained stable since oracle bone script. It later extended to verbs like 'to settle' or 'to install'.
