学年

がくねん · gakunen · JLPT N2 · noun

school

学年 — school

📚 学 (study) + 年 (year) = study-year: one year of school, i.e. a grade

Both kanji appear in 学校 (school) and 一年 (one year). Each school grade is one 年 spent in 学 (study).

学 — hands 𦥑 + roof 冖 + child 子
Originally 學, depicting two hands manipulating something (often interpreted as counting rods or the 爻 trigram symbols) under a roof, with a child 子 below — a child learning under instruction. The simplified form 学 replaces the top with a stylized 龸. Core meaning has always been 'to study, learn'.

年 — grain 禾 over person 人 (oracle bone)
Originally a pictograph of a person carrying a bundle of harvested grain on their back, representing the yearly grain harvest. Because harvests came once a year, the character shifted from meaning 'harvest' to meaning 'year.' The modern form 年 obscures the original 禾 (grain) + 人 (person) structure.
