存じる

ぞんじる · zonjiru · JLPT N2 · verb-ichidan

(humble) to know

存 = keep or hold in mind; 存じる = humbly holding knowledge, the polite way to say I know

Humble stand-in for 知る (to know). 存 means to exist or keep in mind, so 存じる is knowing something you keep in memory. For someone else's knowledge, use the honorific ご存じ.

存 — 才 (talent/sprout) + 子 (child)
Originally written with 才 (a sprout breaking ground) over 子 (child), suggesting a child being raised or kept alive. The character came to mean 'to exist, to remain, to preserve.' Modern uses like 存在 (exist) and 保存 (preserve) reflect this core sense of continued being.
