始まる

はじまる · hajimaru · JLPT N5 · verb-godan

(something) begins

🏁 始 = begin; -まる marks it happening by itself (vs 始める: you start it)

Hajimaru is the intransitive twin of hajimeru. The -aru ending means the thing starts on its own: 授業が始まる, class begins. The -eru ending means someone starts it. Same root as はじめまして, said at a first meeting.
