好み = noun form of 好む (konomu, to like): the thing you like

Turn the verb 好む (konomu, to like) into a noun by swapping む for み and you get 好み, your taste. The kanji 好 is 女 woman + 子 child, a classic pairing for fondness. お好み焼き is okonomiyaki, a pancake made with whatever fillings you like.

好 is an associative compound showing a woman 女 beside a child 子, depicting a mother with her baby. From this image of maternal affection it came to mean 'good, fine, pleasing.' The reading hǎo means 'good'; read hào it means 'to like.'
