失う

うしなう · ushinau · JLPT N3 · verb-godan

to lose

🔑 ushinau ≈ oops, she now lost it

失 (shitsu) means lose, as in 失敗 shippai, failure, and 失礼 shitsurei, a lapse of manners. The old form of 失 shows something slipping out of a hand. It covers abstract losses too: 自信を失う, to lose confidence.
