太る
ふとる · futoru · JLPT N4 · verb-godan
to gain weight
🍔 futoru = eat a FEW TOO many and you gain weight; 太 is the kanji for fat
太 is 大 (big) plus one extra dot: bigger than big, so thick or fat. The same kanji gives 太い (futoi, thick). Add る to make the verb: to become fat, to gain weight. Sound hook: futo- echoes few too, as in a few too many snacks.
太 — 大 'big' + extra dot 丶
太 originally derived from 大 ('big, person with arms outstretched') with an added stroke to mean 'greatest' or 'too much'. The extra dot intensifies 大, signaling something beyond merely big. Over time it came to mean 'very', 'too', or 'highest'.
