売れ行き
うれゆき · ureyuki · JLPT N2 · noun
gross sales
🛒💴 売れ + 行き = selling + going: how well the goods are going
売れ comes from 売る (to sell), and 行き is 'going', from 行く. Together they mean how sales are going, much like asking 'how is it going?' about a product. 売れ行きがいい means it sells well.
行 — crossroads pictograph (left 彳 + right 亍)
行 originally pictured a four-way crossroads in oracle bone script, with two paths meeting. From 'road' it extended to 'walk, go, travel,' and then to 'a row, line' or 'business firm' (read háng). The two halves 彳 and 亍 are the split sides of that ancient crossroads.
