💔 kowa-reru: a COW-a wrecks it, so now it is broken
壊れる is intransitive: the thing breaks by itself (the phone broke). Its transitive partner is 壊す kowasu, to break something. The -reru ending marks the it-happened-on-its-own form, as in 倒れる and 汚れる.
