場面 — scene

🎬 場面 = place (場 ba) + face (面 men): the face a place shows, a scene

場 (ba) means place or spot, as in 会場 venue. 面 (men) means face or surface, as in 画面 screen. Together they mean the side of a place you are shown at one moment: a scene in a story, film or real life.

面 — enclosure 囗 + 自 (nose/face inside)
Originally a pictograph showing a face framed by an outline, with 自 (nose) inside representing the central feature of the face. The early meaning was 'face,' which extended to 'surface,' 'side,' and 'aspect.' In simplified Chinese, 面 also absorbed 麵, adding the meaning 'flour/noodles.'
