地位
ちい · chii · JLPT N3 · noun
position
👑🪜 地位 = ground + rank: the place where you stand in society
地 (chi) means ground or place, and 位 (i) means rank or seat, as in 順位 (ranking). Together they mean where you stand: your social position or status. Same kanji in Chinese 地位 dìwèi.
地 — earth 土 + 也 (phonetic)
地 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The left component 土 means 'earth' or 'soil' and gives the meaning, while 也 on the right hints at the pronunciation. Originally referring to the ground or land, it broadened to mean 'place,' 'region,' and 'territory.'
位 — person radical 亻 + stand 立
位 combines the person radical 亻 with 立 (to stand), originally depicting a person standing in their proper place at court. It came to mean 'position, rank, or place,' and is now also used as a polite measure word for people.
