地
ち · chi · JLPT N3 · noun
earth
🌍 地 = 土 soil + 也; chi as in 地図 chizu, a map of the earth
The left part 土 means soil or ground, and it marks the kanji as being about the land. You hear ち in 地下 chika (underground) and 地図 chizu (map). It is also read じ, as in 地面 jimen (the ground surface).
地 — earth 土 + 也 (phonetic)
地 is a semantic-phonetic compound. The left component 土 means 'earth' or 'soil' and gives the meaning, while 也 on the right hints at the pronunciation. Originally referring to the ground or land, it broadened to mean 'place,' 'region,' and 'territory.'
