🐕👃 嗅 = mouth 口 + smell 臭, and 臭 = nose 自 + dog 犬: sniffing like a dog
自 began as a drawing of a nose, and 犬 means dog, the animal known for its sense of smell. Together they make 臭, smell. Adding 口 gives the action of taking in a smell: 嗅ぐ, kagu, to sniff.
