命令
めいれい · meirei · JLPT N3 · noun
order
📢 命 (command, fate) + 令 (order) = command + order; sounds like may-ray
Both kanji mean to give an order. 命 is 令 with a mouth 口 added, so it is an order spoken aloud. Fate, its other meaning, is heaven's command. Sound hook: meirei, a mayday call telling you what to do.
命 — 亼 (gather) + 卩 (kneeling person) + 口 (mouth)
Originally depicted a kneeling figure receiving an oral command from above, combining 令 (order) with an added 口 (mouth) for emphasis. The image of authority issuing decrees extended from 'command' to 'mandate' and then 'destiny, life,' as one's fate was seen as decreed by Heaven.
令 — person 人 (top) + kneeling figure 卩
Originally a pictograph showing a person under a roof issuing orders to a kneeling subordinate, depicting authority giving commands. The core meaning 'command, order' extended to 'cause/make (someone do something)' and later to honorific senses like 'good' or 'your' (令尊). The phonetic role in compounds like 零 and 铃 came later.
