呆れる

あきれる · akireru · JLPT N2 · verb-ichidan

to be shocked

呆 = mouth 口 over tree 木: jaw dropped, stuck stiff as wood

呆 means dumbfounded, as in 阿呆 (ahō, idiot). あきれる is the jaw-drop at something absurd or outrageous: 呆れた! = I can't believe this. It usually carries disgust or exasperation, not just surprise.

呆 — mouth 口 + tree/wood 木
Originally a variant of 保 (to protect), depicting a person carrying a child. Over time the form simplified to 口 over 木 and the meaning shifted to 'dull, foolish, stunned.' Today 呆 mainly means dumbstruck or slow-witted, as in 发呆 (to space out).
